Club Eifel hosts Superbowl XLIX party

SPANGDAHLEM AIR BASE, Germany -- Members of the Spangdahlem community gathered to watch Superbowl XLIX at Club Eifel on Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, Feb. 2, 2015.

During the championship football game between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots, the club served food and drinks, hosted a football video game tournament and gave away numerous prizes, including electronics and vacations.

Fitness Center renovation brings new equipment

KIRTLAND AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. -- Visitors to Kirtland's East Fitness Center may have noticed a few trailers, renovations and other activities.

The center is getting updates that will not only maximize use of available space, but should make the center's visitors happy, according to Denis Hansard, chief of the sustainment flight for the 377th Force Support Squadron.

Renovations include new equipment, flooring, electrical systems and more. The fitness center building dates back to the 1940s, Hansard said.

"The renovation gave us the opportunity to look at the layout of the building," he said. "It was obviously built before the days of treadmills. The bottom line is we're trying to maximize this old building."

JOINT BASE ELMENDORF-RICHARDSON, Alaska -- Fishing frozen lakes, streams and rivers can be a seasonal pastime around Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, but understanding how to be safe is key to having fun.

"The big thing about ice fishing is to make sure the ice is safe," said Royal Harrop, 673d Force Support Squadron Outdoor Recreation Center director.

"Some people will say if the ice is two inches thick, a person can stand on it. My rule is to have at least four solid inches before putting anyone on it."

Receive Forces: 51 FSS Beddown

OSAN AIR BASE, Republic of Korea -- Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, is home to a multi-national population of more than 10,000 people. In its over-60 year history, the site has been a base of operations for several wars and conflicts from Korea to Vietnam to the post Cold War. Over time, Osan has evolved, adding numerous quality of life facilities and accommodations for its Airmen, families and ROK partners. Yet, considered the most forward deployed unit in the Air Force, it's also a major responsibility for the 51st Fighter Wing and Team Osan to be perpetually ready to receive forces during a contingency.

Managing the resources needed to keep the base ready to receive forces in an emergency is a multi-team effort. A pivotal member of this team is the 51st Force Support Squadron beddown crew, a group responsible for helping ensure the base can be constantly prepared for the addition of more than 6,000 personnel, or more than 60 percent of the base's regular population.
